Bald tires spell danger. They double the risk of skidding. Their slick, notread surface is up to 44 times more likely to have flats as new tires, according to the Tire Industry Safety Council. Excessive or abnormal tread wear, fabric breaks or cuts can also threaten vehicle driving safety.
If skidding occurs, let up on the accelerator. Don’t brake. Steer in the direction the rear of the vehicle is skidding. After gaining control slow down by pumping the brakes lightly.
“Although tire safety and environmental factors play important roles in overall driving safety, motorists are reminded that four out of five highway accidents are caused by driver error." Hanna said.
While driving over the Christmas-New Year holidays Virginians need to remember:
—wear safety belts and buckle all young children in child safety seats.
—make sure drinking and driving falls within the limits of safety and common sense.
—stay within the 55 mph speed limit
—drive defensively.
