measuring shadows to mark winter’s arrival—a giant analemmic sundial. “The noon shadow cast by the gnomon on the sundial grows longer each day between June 21 and December 21,” Knappenberger noted, "and on December 21 reaches its maximum length.” The sundial, painted on the Museum’s parking lot, covers approximately onethird of an acre and uses a large flagpole as its marker (gnomon) to tell time, month, date and season changes. On the day of winter solstice, the earth’s north pole is tipped as far awav from the sun as possible.
