test, benefit payments are based on total annual earnings except for one grace year. The grace year is the first year a person has at least-one month in which he or she did little or no work.
Some people who applied for benefits only to get Medicare indavertently used their grace year before they actually retired. Then, when they did retire at some later time, they were unable to get benefits that year because of their total earnings.
This situation has now been eliminated. People will not have to use their grace year to get Medicare.
But, Hundley said, when these people do retire, they should contact Social Security 2 or 3 months before their retirement month so benefits can start promptly. Another consideration is that back payments can only be made for up to 6 months, so failure to apply promptly could result in lost benefits.
