rate. Neighboring counties have been hit with a rash of chimney fires, according to fire and rescue reports carried in various local papers. But the cold spell that contributed to those blazes left homes here relatively unscathed by fire. A check of fire and rescue squads in the county Monday evening found that Flint Hill and Amissville had been called out for a chimney fire each since sub-zero weather hit ten days ago.

In addition. rescue companies reported no calls for serious automobile accidents since roads turned treacherous last Wednesday.

Doug Bywaters, maintenance supervisor at the highway department's facility in Washington, said snow removal crews w orked more or less around the clock from Tuesday evening until Saturday morning. "I left a crew oui all night on Tuesday so they were on the road when the snow started around 1 a.m..” he said. Noting that the snowfall
