foods programs for a number of years. Commissioner Mason Carbaugh noted that the distribution of USDA donated foods to needy individuals has not been made for seven years although food has been distributed to schools and institutions for use in their donated food programs.
The Donated Food Program is the system by which Virginia and other states cooperate with USDA in making use of foods acquired by USDA under various price support and surplus removal authority. The Price Support and Surplus Removal authorities are designed to provide stability to agricultural markets ensuring reasonable prices to both producers and consumers. Such donated foods received by Virginia amounted to more than $26 million in Fiscal Year 79-80 and $27 million in Fiscal Year 80-81.
