Richard S. Hummel. 51, of Richmond, died Tuesday. January 12, 1982 in McGuire V. A. Medical Center in Richmond.
Funeral services were conducted Friday at the McGuire chapel by the Rev. Mr. Arthur Whitmore and Chaplain John C. Barr. Interment was Saturday in the Amissville United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Hummel was born June 6, 1930 at the Army War College in Washington, D. C.. the son of the late SSgt. (ret.) William H. Hummel and the late May M. Shreve Hummel. He served in the U. S. Army in Japan as Honor Guard to Gen. Douglas MacArthur. He received his Master's Degree in 1%5 from Richmond Professional Institute and was retired from the Virginia Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in 1980 after receiving a special commendation from Governor Dalton for outstanding service for 15 years despite a severe handicap, quadriplegia.
Mr. Hummel was board chairman from 1971-76 of the Woodstock School (a private elementary school) and was currently serving as senior warden of St. Timothy’s Anglican Orthodox Church, both in Richmond; and was a member of the U. S. Naval Institute and the Institute for Historical Review.
Surviving are his wife. Carol Ann Rowzie Hummel, formerly of Amissville. and a sister. Mrs. Sylvia Grace Sorel of Oxon Hill, Md.
