BZA Praised

To the editor:

It was gratifying to read the January 14 NEWS article, "BZA Sticks To Ordinance.” concerning the approval of two special use permits. We strongly endorse the careful, meticulous attention given to the legal requirements for the issuance of such permits by the BZA and the zoning administrator. Such unbiased and thorough application of the laws ensures fair treatment for the applicants and the general public alike.

Special use permits and variances are to be approved only when their issuance will not do harm to the County’s comprehensive planning and when they will not change the nature of the area in which they are requested. These and other requirements must be strictly applied to cases coming before the BZA. or else the County’s basic planning and zoning ordinances become a shambles.

All of Piedmont Virginia is subject to intense land use pressure. We need not look far to see what happens when local government loses control of the land use decision-making process. The Piedmont Environmental' Council—particularly those of us who live in Rappahannock County—saluate the entire Board of Zoning Appeals for their dedication to the fair application of the laws in their official duties. The County will be well served by that dedication.
