Rousing political oratory has M?en a traditional feature of old fasnioned Independence Day celebrations. The committee could start now issuing invitations to speak, looking first in our own backyard to such political stars as nationally syndicated columnist James J. Kilpatrick, former presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy and our elected representatives to the Virginia General Assembly and Congress.
At earlier fairs, rope climbs, penny tosses and other games aimed at kids have been big attractions. Those could be revived and expanded. Drawing from the wealth of musical talent in the county, the committee could put together an all-star line-up of blues, blue grass, jazz, country and gospel. White elephant sales and auctions, box lunches, bull roasts and bake sales could round out the afternoon, culminating in the fireworks display at Avon Hall.
It all takes planning and after the planning must come early publicity to ensure that people will mark Washington’s old fashioned Fourth of July Fair on their calendars. ' With the wolf of winter at the door, summer may seem a long way off but we urge volunteers to come forward now and get the Independence Day ball rolling.
