The Washington Town Council convened on a bitter cold and snowy Wednesday night for a short (fifteen minute) meeting to discuss some minor town problems. Only four of the six council members were present: Dorothy Clater, Dorothy Hawkins. C. E. Giles, and Charlie Jenkins. Mayor Newbill Miller was also present.
After the minutes from the previous meeting were accepted, Charlie Jenkins told Mayor Miller about a mysterious gift left the town by an anonymous benefactor. Jenkins said that he found two full bottles of chlorine bleach on the steps of the Aater treatment shed, but was reluctant to use them. “No, don’t use them,” Miller cautioned. ‘‘Don't use anything that you don’t buy yourself. Bleach is not that expensive.” Other council members agreed.
The next item of business was an offer by Peter Kramer to donate the pews that had originally been in the church that now serves as the town hall back to the town. Kramer had been spearheading an effort of about six months to purchase the pews and return them. His letter stipulated that the pews eventually be returned to their original home in the church. “I’d like to have them back." Miller said. "But we don’t want to interfere in any way with the efforts of the fire and rescue auxiliary." (The auxiliary presently operates a thrift shop inside the old church for the benefit of the Fire and Rescue Department.)
"We can put them back in and still have room for the used clothing operation," Councilwoman Dorothy Hawkins said. "We need those pews back there...that's supposed to be our town hall...we should actually meet there.”
