The Rappahannock supervisors started "sharpening their knives" on Monday in preparation for tackling a preliminary 198283 budget of S3.4 million, a total that calls for a hefty 25 percent hike in local taxes despite drawing on $140,000 from county surplus funds.
The proposed budget, which reflects all departmental requests as submitted to the board, shows an increase of about 16 percent over the current year's $2.9 expenditures.
County accountant Wally Cox noted that revenue from state and federal sources will not keep pace with the proposed jump in expenditures, leaving any upward change to be covered by a corresponding upward change in property taxes. The preliminary budget
