It was a study in styles. A few of the spellers sounded out with absolute assurance, rattling off letters in staccato, machine gun fire bursts. Some squeezed out their words a letter at a time, .oices rising in a questioning guess.
Kids marched to the microphone like convicted criminals going to the gallows, hands clasped tightly at their breasts, and then raced back to their seats after they won a reprieve with a correct spelling.
Othe . sauntered to the front of the stage with wide grins and arms swinging easily at their sides. Some grabbed their hearts when Mrs. Piper's ‘uh huh’ signaled that they’d made it through another round.
Some just shrugged casually when an incorrect try sent them down from the stage.
1 ne "killer” words seem to come in bunches. Four kids in a row joined the audience after missing “ceaselessly,” "pennant,” “blanching” and “radically."
