Not Listening
To the editor:
It is good to know that there is harmony among the members of the school board. The sad part of it is that they are so insensitive and out of touch with the real needs and wishes of the people of the county whom they are appointed to serve and who care about our schools and the future of our young people.
Quality requires space, faculty, equipment and a more varied curriculum and all this costs money. There is an element in this county whose main interest is to keep taxes low. We can't have it both ways.
This situation has a solution but it isn’t in lower taxes, nor in the rich people paying tuition to send their children to private schools, nor in some groups setting up schools in their churches.
The public school system is a democratic institution and if we are to have quality education we have to be willing to pay for it.
No matter who the principals of our schools are, they can’t do their best until these facts are realized and our schoolsi are supported to that extent. Some of our young people don’t want to pick apples, shovel manure for rich landowners or sew blouses.
I fail to understand how ignoring the demonstrated feelings of the tax payers of the county, firing Dr. Bloomer and now Mr. Wingfield will accomplish our goal of quality education here.
When are the elected and appointed boards in this county going to listen to the people who live in the county and pay taxes and are affected by their decisions?
