Lysik detailed the time frame involved from the point a referral for special education services is received through screening committee meetings and eligibility meetings which involve medical, psychological and sociological evaluations and educational assessment. “Special education is coming along very nicely at the elementary level,” he said.
No Room At RCHS
Lysik added, however, that as the children progress in school, work has to be done at RCHS to expand services.
“We will have very extensive needs at the high school for added programing which will require space that I don’t see as available now,” he said, noting that 135 children are currently served by both schools in special education classes.
In dealing with each special education case, evaluation criteria and timetables must be met or the 'school board—and ultimately the county—face the potential of legal action by parents, Lysik warned.
