(Continued from Page 3) noted, however, that the major portion of the increase comes from 6V2 new positions, “presumably all state money" since law enforcement salaries are paid by the State Compensation Board. The new slots include a full-time secretary ($8,500), two deputies ($11,195 each) and four dispatchers ($32,000 total). The compensation board awarded the sheriff the same ten percent pay increase given to other constitutional officers bringing his salary from $20,250 to $22,275. Increases for three current deputies and the correctional officers . are also approximately ten percent as listed in the preliminary budget. The only personnel decrease comes in the appropriation for part-time deputies which drops from $11,195 to $7,488.
The sheriff’s proposed budget also allows (1) $7,095 for motor vehicles and equipment which covers one additional police cruiser and (2) $10,000 for architectural fees on jail renovation.
Total for the board of supervisors on the preliminary budget is $15,845, down $10,825 from the current year due to a drop in allocation for legal fees, according to Cox.
Budget requests from the commissioner of revenue’s office reflect an increase of approximately 18 percent, up from $47,077 to a proposed $55,988. The accountant attributed the rise to a new part-time position listed at $8,000.
