Dorothy P. Clater is also completing six years of service to the town. She serves as town clerk, not an elected position, and was born in Washington. Clater is an assistant cashier at the Rappahannock National Bank. Clater said that she likes serving the people of the town and, has a strong commitment to the town's future.
Urging from neighbors prompted C. E. (Skippy) Giles to run for the council six years ago and the same public pressure has compilled him to seek reelection twice. Giles is the proprietor of the Washington Cash Store. He is a native of the town and has been especially interested in the upgrading of the town water system.
Charles R. Jenkins, the caretaker of the town's water system, joked that he first ran tor council 15 years ago, "since 1 had to come anyway to report on the water system." Jenkins is a retired government mechanic but the severe water problems of the past year gave him an almost full-time job for a while. "1 was born here, lived most of my life here, and 1 really like
