Quantico Marine Corps Base recorded 5 gobblers bn the opening day and 3 each on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Wildlife Manager Major Billy Windsor reported that, "of the |4 birds we have checked here to date, one of them weighed in at over 21 lbs., one was 20l/2 lbs., four were in the 20 lb. range and the other eight scaled in at a variety of lower weights." Windsor also said that, “regardless of the weights, all of the birds that we checked were in excellent shape.”
At the Seven-Day Market in Pearis^urg, Va. (Giles Co.) three birds had been checked in by late afternoon Wednesday. In Tazewell, Va. the J. B. Harris Grocery claimed six birds checked since the opening on Saturday, April 17. One of the gobblers tipped the scales at 22'/j lbs. and the others ranged from 13'/j to 19'/j lbs.
Three check stations recorded no birds to date. They were (Rockbridge Co.) Maury River Grocery in Buena Vista; GrifTs Country Store in Singers Glen. (Rockingham Co.) and in Warren County, The Apple House in Linden. Two stations recorded seven birds each: in Alleghany Co., the Stone Wall Service Station in Covington, and in Bath Co. the County Seat Exxon Station in Warm Springs. One station, Weakley’s Grocery in Madison County’s Etlan, recorded four birds and two stations reported one bird each. They were Jenkins Garage in Amissville, and Flat Run Supply in Orange County’s Locust Grove, Va.
Spring gobbler season is open statewide through May 15 from one half hour before sunrise until 11 A.M. each day. The bag limit is one bearded bird per day, two per license year. The yearly bag limit includes fall and spring seasons combined.
