The accountant had one piece of budgetary good news for the supervisors. “There’s more surplus than projected (a year ago).” he reported, estimating that the July 1. 1982. balance will be $500,000. “And that’s probably conservative," Cox added.
It may be advisable to maintain a higher surplus balance if the decision is made to embark upon a building expansion program at the high school, he said. “Otherwise, it’s about twice as much as needed in Rappahannock County.”
In the preliminary draft of the 1982-83 budget, Cox projects a surplus balance of $360,868 for June 30, 1983, drawing approximately $140,000 in surplus funds for operating expenses of county government in the coming fiscal year.
The supervisors scheduled a budget work session for 8 a.m. on May ^ prior to their regular monthly meeting. Subsequently, a synopsis of the proposed budget will be advertised for public hearing in June.
