Mrs. Anne Keyser gave the following presentation as part of a local history series sponsored by the Rappahannock County Library last year.
Mrs. Keyser was born in Rappahannock County and has lived here for all of her 78 years. She and her husband Aubrey reside at The Oaks, a few miles from the town of Washington. She represents the fourth generation of her family to live in a house that was originally built as an Episcopal Rectory before the Revolutionary War and added on to over the years.
Mrs. Keyser taught school for 53 years: 7 years in Front Royal. 13 in Washington, and 33 in Sperryville. Her memories of teaching rural children and the stories handed down to her by her parents provide a unique perspective on what Rappahannock life was like years ago. This is the first part of a series based on Mrs. Keyser's presentation.
