RCHS government classes completed a mock assembly last week where each individual student introduced a legislative proposal in hopes of turning their proposal into “law”.
Debate on the floor of the assembly was strong as the groups considered the issues of abortion, gun control, minimum wage, capital punishment, and laws against the abuse of the elderly in nursing homes. Proposals that passed the assembly included:
—To provide that all private dwellings be equipped with smoke detectors
—To allow prayer in public schools (not mandatory)
—To provide that all school board members be elected rather than appointed
—To repeal Article V of the Constitution and change the methods of amending the Constitution
—To establish registration of all guns
—To lower the current highway speed limit from 55 to 50.
—To increase education appropriations by decreasing defense spending
