Girl Scouts and Brownies from troops throughout the county explored the World of Water at their second annual May Madness Camporee over the Mother’s Day weekend, at the Howard Holschuhs’ Shaw House near Castleton.
About 60 girls from four Brownie troops, four Junior troops, one Cadette troop and one senior troop participated in the two-night campout.
As their gift to the people of the county, the girls picked up trash along part of the Thornton River in Sperryville, along part of the Gid Brown Hollow road, and along part of the Covington River at Rediviva.
A large pick-up truck load of trash bags was carried off to the county dumpsters following about an hour and a half's work in the rain Saturday morning.
In the afternoon the girls observed the life forms in a small pond, collecting, examining and returning everything from small water bugs and frog and fish eggs to a large bull-frog tadpole. They learned about the role mills played in the settlement and development of the county and located the old mill stone from the washedaway mill at Rock Mills.
They also tested their physical fitness on a trail on the Holschuhs’ land that involved knee bends and chin-ups in between scrambling up and down hills and across wooden plank bridges over creeks for about one-and-a-half miles.
Best times over the course were recorded for Kyle VanWegen for the Brownies, Teressa Jenkins for the Juniors. Jane Kidwell for the Cadettes, and Debbie Helmer tor the Seniors. Carolyn Man waring and Cindy Pronovitch tied for the leaders best time.
The girls also experimented with mixing plaster of Paris and water to create recipe-card holders for their mothers for Mothers’ Day.
Wendy Stringfellow, a cadette. was chosen best allaround camper of the weekend.
