The experts blame the increased consumption of alcohol by adolescents on its easy availability and social acceptance.
As part of Rappahannock’s drug abuse program, we need to get the message across loud and clear that teenage drinking is not socially acceptable. We need to educate youngsters, beginning at an early age, on the health problems posed by overconsumption of alcohol. We need to educate the parents who react with “Oh, thank God he’s not smoking dope” when they discover that their teenage son is drunk. And we need to educate store owners who are doing a sloppy job of policing sales of alcoholic beverages to minors. In the concern over marijuana, amphetimines, barbituates, cocain and the long list of other substances abused by young people, we hope the very real problem of teenage alcoholism isn’t overlooked.
