But Gov. Robb's successful effort to contain the Wilder rebellion could backfire dangerously among the conservatives.

In his determination to reassure the defecting blacks. he may have positioned himself considerably farther to the left than many of the party's right, as vyell as the independent conservatives, will Find acceptable.

Thus, while solving one problem, he may have created another which is potentially as serious.

Choice Critical

The choice of the candidate, therefore, becomes critically important. It will have to be a person who either already has statewide stature, or has the ability to develop such stature in the short six months remaining before the election.

Beyond that, it will have to be a person of sufficient philosophical breadth and flexibility to reassure one wing of the party without frightening the other out of its wits
