Canker Worm. This caterpillar is about l-l'/i inches long, is either green or brown and has white stripes. Sometimes this caterpillar is seen hanging from trees by a slender, web-like thread. The Spring Canker Worm is a serious forest pest that can also be controlled by spraying with Sevin.
A serious insect pest that is moving into the northern part of the state is the gypsy moth. This insect, in its caterpillar stage, is not to be contused with the tent caterpillar. To identify this caterpillar, look for the five pairs of blue dots and six pairs of red dots on the insect’s back. This caterpillar has the potential to destroy millions of dollars worth of timberland in our state. Any sightings of a gypsy moth caterpillar should be reported immediately to the nearest VDACS Plant Pest Section regional office, (or to the Richmond office 804-7863515), the county forester, or the County {^tension Agent.
