Ten Panthers will advance to the state track meet at Radford High School in Salem on the basis of qualifying performances turned in at last weekend’s regional competition.
Rappahannock’s boys amassed 39 points for a strong fifth place finish out of 14 schools at Fluvanna on Saturday. “We’re so pleased with the boys. They've never done this well before,’’ reported coach Ann Spieker.
RCHS took two red ribbons in the boys Group A, Region B finals with Eugene Grigsby's second place in the 220 yard dash in 23 seconds and Doyle Dunn’s leap of 6'1” for second in the high jump. Grigsby added a qualifying fourth place finish of 10.4 seconds in the 100 yard dash. Then, along with Jeff Porter, Carl Frye and Edward Summers, Grigsby helped the 880 relay team to the state finals in 1:37.4 for fourth place.
Frye will join contestants in the high jump at the state meet, qualifying with a sixth place leap of 5’10”. Also competing in the field events will be Tim Williams on the basis of his throw of 43’8” for fourth in the shot put at the regionals.
Scott Keithley will represent Rappahannock in the distance races, clocked at 4:37.1 for third in the mile and 10:21.2 for fourth in the two mile run.
The Lady Panthers had a great afternoon as well as Fluvanna. Kathy Davis, Cristol Porter, Raynetta Ghenn and Kim Williams shattered the old RCHS record as they advanced to state competition with a third place in the 880 relay, rounding the track in 1:50.
