Court Day
‘‘Court day was a big day in the county when everyone came down out of the mountains and brought things to sell. That’s where everybody met. That is, that’s where the men met. No woman was seen on the streets during court day. Court day was here in Washington. One father would come all around and pick up all the children, and take them to school jn the morning. The lawyer came and took me in the morning and my father took the whole bunch home because it was not very safe to be on the streets then. There were too many people in all of the barrooms and they were, well, happy-minded.”
