Spring is the season when Virginians find themselves coping with insects that are intent upon defoliating trees and plants. This spring is no exception, according to John Tate, Biological Control Supervisor for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
According to Tate, there are three tree defoliating pests to be aware of this time of year. The most common of the three is the Eastern Tent Caterpillar, which is on the verge of hitting its peak for the season. This caterpillar devours foliage of many landscape and forest trees but is particularly fond of the wild cherry trees. Its main characteristic is that it forms a web or tent-like structure in trees, hence the name tent caterpillar. Tate recommends spraying Sevin or any other pesticide registered for that use, on trees infested with Eastern Tent Caterpillar.
