A week of near record temperatures and sweltering humidity ended with a bang Thursday night as howling winds, thunder and lightning—plus a little rain—blew across Rappahannock County.
The storm left 600 Potomac Edison Power Company customers and several hundred customers of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative without power as high winds and lightning joined forces to knock out substations and topple treeB onto transmission lines.
“It was the strangest thunderstorm I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” said REC’s Francis Updike. “It was so broad, so wide spread. We had lines down from Amissville to Caroline County and all points in between. There were 7,500 homes out of service at the peak.”
