Hughes said, adding that plans call for the dental unit to be a permanent facility.
“Two things concern me,” commissioner Werner Krebser responded. “We’re setting a precedent allowing a trailer in the county.” (Under the current ordinance, trailers are allowed only in mobile home parks or by temporary permit while a residence is being constructed.) “But I also recognize the importance of providing dental care for our children,” Krebser said, asking if the unit could be moved behind the elementary school building where it won’t be as visible. “I’m just thinking of the neighbors,” he added. “And if the elementary school is ever enlarged, the clinic could be incorporated into the building. That would resolve the problem of the trailer.”
“Gentlemen, this is here now and it’s paid for,” Miller reminded his fellow commissioners.
Richard Sharp, Health Department administrator for the five-county area, said that the trailer had originally been used as a medical clinic in Louisa. When that county incorporated its clinic into a permanent building, “we saw the possibility of getting something for Rappahannock,” he said. At about the same time, Greene County disbanded its dental clinic and the Health Department was able to retrieve two dental chairs from that source.
