Country folks say that when the tassels stand on end and branch out every wild which-way turning a com stalk into a skinny lady with frizzled hair, the plant is suffering from stress.
Lack of rain has local farmers and gardeners stressed. According to experts, the weather hasn't reached a drought situation yet. Still, when people cut their feet walking on the dried clay around the corn plants, they know something is wrong. During a dry spell, plants overcompensate by trying to reach maturity too fast. The shucks curl and the corn is stunted due to too much sun and heat and too little water.
Ironically, record rainfalls this spring kept farmers waiting to plant. In fact, Rappahannock streams reached flood levels in April, with nine inches of rain falling during the first three weeks of the month, three inches in one day on April 15. Damage to low-lying fields, which looked more
