Courtesy Ruby Jenkins Before Skyline Drive was built, it was a topic of great interest to local landowners and businessmen. At right is a map of the proposed route and a caption explaining why the Virginia portion of the drive was delayed. When local construction did begin, it provided jobs for many depression-era laborers, who lived in camps along its path and who were hosts to President Roosevelt at one much-publicized evening meal.
