Cadette Girl Scout Troop 502 went to the Outer Banks of North Carolina last week.
We arrived at Camp* Salvo, between Nag’s Head and Cape Hatteras, Monday afternoon. We immediately put on our bathing suits and went swimming in the ocean. After about an hour of swimming we came back to set up six tents. It took us a long time to set up the tents becaus the wind was blowing hard. Then we ate and cleaned up dinner. After dinner we went to bed.
On Tuesday morning we went on a nature walk, guided by two Park Rangers. They told us how the barrier islands were formed and how they are always changing. They also talked abput the plant and animal life on the islands. For example, they told us how ant lions trap ants but when they tried to demonstrate this the ants kept escaping from the ant lion traps. The Rangers’ excuse was that one of the Rangers hadn’t trained his ants well enough. After the nature hike we went for another swim.
That afternoon we went wading in the sound on the other side of the island and then we watched life-saving techniques taught by two lifeguards on the beach. Next we had another swim in the ocean. Then we went
