The most common rooting medium is washed builder’s sand. Other materials include peat moss, mixtures of equal parts peat and sand, vermiculite or perlite. The exact medium is not important as long as it is aerated, drains well and yet holds adequate moisture for the cuttings.
Depending on the plant involved, cuttings taken at this time of the year may be semi-hardwood or softwood cuttings. Softwood cuttings are taken from new growth that still is relatively soft and succulent and before the tissue has matured or become woody.
