This decision making process shares the focus with art at the week-long summer sculpture program and at all of SPECTRA’S classes. “The schedule is decided upon by who is here— after they get here. It isn’t packaged before the students arrive. They become part of the package,” Pickett explained.
“When I was first asked to be part of this summer program, I thought I’d be a hermit making sculpture. But that’s not the way Don works at all. Every individual’s creativity is encouraged but it’s in a group situation. The group interaction is very important to him and it’s becoming very important to me” the sculptor said.
“It’s collaborative art in a sense—you work together and enhance your own creativity,” he explained.
“And it’s terrific! I really like it. It’s a lot of fun. I’m finding areas where before I only trusted myself. I’m learning to give up those areas, that old isolation, and allowing others to be involved in my creativity and me in theirs. It’s a more exciting way to teach.
“I’ve always had a very negative attitude about group projects,” Pickett continued. Before, whenever a group of artists got together, I was always the one wandering off alone to set up my tent and do my own thing. Here, I’m trying to find out if my enjoyment
people can be extended while I’m making sculpture. Now it’s possible for me to understand how a finished product can result from a collaborative effort. Before SPECTRA, art was always a singular activity for me.”
