The Virginia Department of Education this week released competency results for tenth grade students that showed Rappahannock, in superintendent Robert Estabrook’s words, “tops among all our neighbors.”
The test, with a passing score of 70, measures reading and math skills which must be mastered before graduation. Of the 70 students taking the test in Rappahannock last March, 100 percent received a reading passing score, Ob.7 percent passed the math test.
The statewide combined passing rate for some 7b,000 students was 04 percent.
Local school officials were elated to learn that Rappahannock had beat all the bigger school systems in a six county section of the northern Shenandoah Valley. Winchester city schools ranked second in the area.
There, 224 students took the test with a combined 07.3 percent passing rate — 07.b percent passed reading and 0b.2 percent passed math.
