The pressure is clearly mounting on state Sen. Hunter B. Andrews of Hampton to throw his hat into the ring for the Democratic nomination for the U. S. Senate next year.
Indeed, some Capitol observers believe they see signs, however miniscule, of movement on Sen. Andrew’s part toward a candidacy. That nomination will be bestowed when the party’s state convention meets next May in Norfolk.
It is generally agreed, among both politicians and pundits, that for any Democratic nominee to have a ghost of a chance of unhorsing incumbent Republican Sen. John Warner, the Democrat will have to be running under the most favorable possible political conditions.
That is, he or she will have to be positioned not so far to the right as to turn off the black, labor and liberal Democratic constitutency groups, nor so far to the left as to frighten the independent conservatives who, it is said, control the conduits to the fabled “Main
