Sperryville weather watcher Dennis Wingfield reports that precipitation in his area was about an inch less in August than during the same time last year. During the first four weeks of August, 1983, the rainfall totaled 3.21 inches compared to 4.19 last year.
Including July this year looks even dryer. From July 1 - August 28, 1983, there have been just 4.04 inches of precipitation near Sperryville. Last year, 8.52 inches fell during the same eight week period.
If it seems hotter, that’s because it is. Monday Wingfield said that day’s high temperature was the day’s low the year before. Monday the high was 86 degrees and the low was 69. On August 29, 1982, the high was 69 and the low was 40 degrees.
Wingfield says the average daytime temperature during the first 28 days of August was 86.2 degrees, the average night temperature was 62. The warmest day was August 20 when the thermometer hit 99 in Sperryville.
