Paul M. Frantz of Washington will be an official delegate to the Treaty of Paris Bicentennial Congress of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution held in Paris, France, this week. Mrs. Frantz and the couple’s son and daughterin-law, Dr. and Mrs. Paul T. Frantz of Roanoke, will also make the trip across the Atlantic for the ceremonies.”
The observances of the 200th anniversary of the treaty signing began on Tuesday with a wreath laying on Lafayette’s grave in Picpus Cemetery. This was to be followed by the dedication of a bronze hook and placing of a wreath by SAR President General Warren G. Hayes Jr. at the Hotel d’York, site of the actual signing.
On Thursday, the group will take a day’s trip to the landing beaches in Normandy and place a wreath at the St. Laurent Cemetery. Then on Friday, a memorial mass will be held at Notre Dame Cathedral followed by a reception by the Mayor of Paris at the Hotel de Ville. The Ambassadors of the United States, Great Britain, Spain and Netherlands will participate in the official ceremony at Versailles, including a tour of the Chateau de Versailles and dinner at the Trianon Palace. An historical pageant, “Versailles and the Independence of the United States” will end the day with fireworks and a fountain display in the gardens of the palace.
The final activity on Saturday will be a review march with the Garde Republicaine up the Champs Elysees and the placing of wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe. A reception by the U.S. Ambassador will close the week’s events.
