Greg Settle and Donna Williams were just sitting around at Big Roger .Jenkins’ fruit stand a half-mile east of Sperryville Sunday evening around 5 p.m. when they noticed a small private plane flying over. “We thought to ourselves that it must be Jim Bill Fletcher, or Nelson Lane taking a spin,” Settle recalled. “Then a minute or so later, we saw the plane coming back in kind of low, JO feet off the ground. It missed the power line by maybe ten feet, landed in Clifford Miller’s field and stopped JO yards from the fence.”

Settle and Williams rode over to the field to see what was wrong. “The pilot waved us down. Said he’d run out of gas!”

According to Settle, the 65-year-old pilot, Frank Alters of Jacksonville, Fla., was traveling from the Sunshine State to visit relatives in Pennsylvania. “He said he was supposed to land near Gordonsville but he couldn’t
