better and we need a tighter defense—which means being in better shape, being stronger,” the coach said. “We’re going to be in shape this year,” Davis promised. “I thought we were in shape last year, but we weren’t,” he added, chuckling. “Not compared to this year!”
“It’s much harder,” confirmed Vinnie Caporuscio, returning letterman who leads the Panthers’ offensive attack.
“Mr. Davis has really buckled dowm on us,” Jim Racer, another veteran of the ’82 season, agreed. “He’s really running us.”
“Yeah, getting us in shape.”
“I’m hoping this heat will let up soon,” Davis said, adding that his players went through tougher work-outs before school started when practice sessions were held in the cooler, early morning. “I’d like to wait until evening but I can’t,” the coach added, explaining that he holds an after-school job.
But despite the heat, opponents will face a prepared Rappahannock squad this season, according to Davis. And despite his team’s lack of speed, RCHS will improve its win-loss record, the coach predicts. “Last year, the kids were out to play soccer because Rappahannock finally had a soccer team. This year, the novelty has worn off. This year, they’re Out to win.”
