One cannot speak of “phase” without referring to slope. What is slope?

“Slope” is defined as being inclined from the level or the verticle; slanting. “Verticle” is perpendicular to the plane of the horizon; upright; extending up and down.

Thus a 90 degree angle is verticle, not sloping at all; a 100 percent drop, if you please.

A 100 percent slope is a 45 degree angle. Picture yourself traveling along the hypotenuse of a right triangle. The hypotenuse is a 45 degree angle to the horizontal plane. In moving along the line, you advance one foot to every one foot you climb. So: 100 percent slope.
