If the governor declared Rappahannock County to be a drought disaster area, local farmers would be eligible for low interest loans and reduced rates on the purchase of livestock feed. However, no action will be taken until the county board petitions for disaster status. The county board in Fauquier passed such a resolution at its August 16 meeting and Culpeper supervisors will consider one at their September 6 session. Fauquier’sv was one of the first three in a growing pile of petitions on the governor’s desk from counties waiting for help from the state.
Rappahannock, Fauquier and Culpeper are among a list of counties previously declared eligible for special livestock grazing on land set aside under the Payment in Kind (PIK) conservation program.
