“It’s going to be between us and Strasburg,’’ says RCHS coach Ann Spieker of her cross country squad’s chances on taking the Skyline District crown—and after that, the state championship.
“All of the other schools (in the district) lost so many of their top runners that they won’t be in contention,” Spieker said.
Skyline’s Strasburg was first among 24 “A” schools in Virginia’s 1982-83 cross country finals. Rappahannock was third, just a skinny point behind second place Stonewall Jackson, another Skyline team.
“Strasburg has everybody back but their number one runner. We have everyone returning except for Larry (Sisk), who ran either second or third last season,” the coach noted.
Spieker broke into a big grin as she reported that her harriers ran the uphill section of the Blue Rock Farms course on Monday only a 16 second difference between the leader and the sixth man. “They’re pushing each other so hard,” Spieker said. “That’s when you get the good times and the good teams.”
Senior Scott Keithley is not yet showing the form that carried him to a fifth place finish at state last year but the each noted that hot, humid weather has interfered with condictioning. “We’re only running half of what we would be doing,” added Spieker.
To date in practice, Ronnie Atkins has finished in front of Keithley. It’s a continuance of the friendly rivalry that the two shared last year. “Ronnie looks tough. He’s really showing improvement,” the coach said.
