Theresa McLawhom, the elementary school physical education teacher who made her debut last year as the varsity coach for RCHS’s girls’ basketball, is back again.
It’s a more relaxed, more confident Mizz Mac at the helm for 1983-84, judging by Monday night’s final practice before the season opener on Tuesday against non-district Warren County. The reason? “I have 11 girls out for varsity,” she reported, grinning from ear to ear.
All of McLawhom’s starters have returned. She loses only two reserves from last year’s squad. And the returnees are no longer novice freshmen, sophomores and juniors, new to the varsity ranks. They’re experienced, battle-hardened veterans. To top it all off, Mizz Mac has several promising graduates from the junior varisty who have moved up to the big league.
No wonder she’s relaxed, confident and smiling. But she’s not going out on a limb to promise the district championship, not after last year’s dismal one-win season. “We’re shooting for better than 500 percent, a winning season. And I think we’ll do it,” McLawhom predicted.
Karen Jordan has to be the odds on favorite to retain her crown as most valuable Lady Panther. Though just a ninth grader in 198283, she was named to the first team, all-Skyline District. This year, as a sophomore, the five foot, nine inch forward will be “awesome,” according to her coach. “She will be strong on rebounding, strong underneath and she ought to average 20 points a game,” McLawhom said.
Forwards Ann Tupper, a senior, and Natalie Butler, a sophomore, will be back. “Natalie is a good outside shooter, the best on the team from outside, and Ann has more hustle than anybody I’ve ever seen on a basketball court,” the coach reported.
