Shotguns cracked with dawn on Monday as deer season opened in Rappahannock County. But despite hunters aplenty in fields and forests, the kill was down from previous years, judging by reports from local checking stations.
Blue Ridge Guns in Amissville had the highest talley and the biggest trophies. William Dawson of Amissville held first place in the gun shop’s “Big Buck” contest at the close of opening day with a 14 point, 170 pound animal. In the runner-up slot was 11-year-old George Grove who bagged an 11 point buck, his first deer ever, that tipped the scales at 158 pounds field dressed.
In total, Blue Ridge reported 60 deer checked. “That’a s little down from last year,” noted Ruther Bowers, echoing findings at the county’s other checking stations.
