Finally, the engine was abandoned in the woods after the advent of more powerful diesel engines. A tree grew around its engine, axle, and firebox. Its back wheels fell into the creek.
Flint Hill steam engine hobbyist Willie Gentry says that may have been the fate of many old engines now hidden away in the woods. Collectors are now eagerly searching them out.
Gentry was part of a 2f> member volunteer group that spent two days last December clearing the woods from around the engine so it could be removed and restored. The operation was closely supervised by park officials and the engine belongs to the park although the engine association has a “definite renewable loan
