live. Around every bend in the road is another heart stopping, spirit lifting view. But more than for the physical characteristics of this county, we can be thankful for its people. This is a community in the best sense of the word. While giving thanks for this, we must also resolve to do what we can to perpetuate this community spirit.
A stranger passes us on the highway with a wave as he goes by. Wave back.
Our storekeepers, merchants and mechanics greet us by name, extend credit when we’re running short or have left a wallet at home, cash our checks without the high security identification procedures of urban stores. Support them. Buy from them. They need our business to stay in business.
Our local law enforcement is made up of peace officers. When they have a warrant to serve, they try first to send word and have the person come in to the office. They remind folks that an inspection sticker expires the next day or that a county sticker is due. When a law is broken, they treat the perpetrator like someone who has made a mistake rather than as a criminal. Cooperate with them. They’re doing their jobs. Don’t treat them with suspicion as if the county is divided into two camps: the cops and the rest of us.
Folks here are neighborly. They keep alive the spirit of cooperation that made bam raisings and quilting bees part of country life. We can feed that spirit by volunteering to serve on fire and rescue squads, checking on the elderly who live nearby, watching a neighboring family’s house while they’re away, stopping to help motorist in trouble, sharing our resources when a home has been destroyed by tire or just by smiling and saying hello to the people we see on the streets, in the County’s businesses and offices.
This holiday, we should give thanks for the things that make Rappahannock special. Along with thanks, wre should give a private promise to work together to keep it special.
