“The tornado came through in 1929. The tornado blew down two churches, the school house and three dwelling houses. And one child was killed in the schoolhouse. Then, ironically, it went right across the top of Red Oak, where the fire tower is now. It didn’t hit our house, because it wasn’t close enough to the center to do any damage, but the suction from the storm pulled it to the west and the top of it is leaning about four inches. It went right on across by Rock Mills, and over by Ben Venue. It was a very frightening thing to see. And nobody knew what it was. We’d never heard of one in this section of the country, had no warning system or anything.
