Before the Thornton raged through Rock Mills it left its banks as it twisted around Fletcher’s Mill. Gene and Virginia Wood, who had been visiting, returned home to find their home at the old mill unreachable by car. Friends watched as they left their car within yards of their home and started across the little bridge over the Thornton. They were never seen alive again.

By dawn, news of their disappearance had spread and a stunned crowd gathered at the battered bridge to watch as rescue workers continued the search begun the night before. No one looking at the debrisstrewn landscape and toppled trees had any hope for their survival, and by mid-morning the searchers had dragged the bodies of the well-loved couple out of the dirty river.

Meanwhile, at a spot lower on the river Ed Pawley returned to his home as friends and neighbors organized to clean up and repair the water damage. Rock Mills had been forever altered, with most of the large trees gone, the familiar hills gouged out by the angry Thornton and the old truss bridge swept away. As he walked up his muddy driveway to the front door, he plucked a woman’s shoe from a tree and put it away, a reminder that he had barely escaped.
