After looking at the site. th< hoard agreed that its unusual shape caused the Browns a hardship not generally shared by others. Since there are no other houses nearby, the board couldn't find that the addition would hurt the character of the neighborhood. Board member Peter Kramer said that were the Browns to come before the board requesting permission to build an entirely new house, he would vote for it because of their nonconforming lot.
Kramer moved the board approve the variance with the condition that the addition be no closer to the road than the existing building.
The board agreed that side set-back will be adequate if Brown goes through with plans to buy a portion of land with a shed on it from neighboring landowner Frances Thornton.
However, the Brown variance wasn’t approved until after considerable discussion of the pending Crane amendment before the planning commission. Zoning administrator Koniek said he wanted to be absolutely certain that the Brown request to construct an addition to an existing nonconforming structure was different from the Crane request to construct an addition to an existing nonconfomring structure in Flint Hill.
