• John Willard Marriott, 83, another self-made multimillionaire. His immediate family’s 19 percent interest in the Marriott Corp., which includes hotels and restaurants worldwide, is' worth $373 million, Forbes says. Mr. Marriott was a poor Mormon who raised sheep and put himself through college selling woolen underwear. In 1927, he and his wife opened a root beer stand. Later they built the Hot Shoppes chain and added their first hotel in 1957. Mr. Marriott, who remains chairman of the corporation which his two sons run, owns homes in this region and in Washington, D. C.
• Joe Lewis Albritton, 58, who has broadcasting, publishing and banking interests in Washington and Houston worth at least $350 million, according to Forbes.
